Not needing to install a spreadsheet, webdav/nfs stack, configure either
webdav or the nfs share (on either the client or server side), or
resolve the problems in a multi-machine file-URL space.

(Unknown versions of) Excel seem to handle this reasonably well, in my
recent experience with a small engineering team schedule/status
spreadsheet.
Of course, a (web) server-/service-based solution can handle
collaboration in interesting ways ... but then so can any client/server
system, though it's easier when the server's in control.
