Ah! I was hoping you were using the more portal-forum-like aspects.  
Live web-based file editing is using ActiveX in IE to edit MS Office  
documents, isn't it? Proprietary technologies editing proprietary  
formats in a proprietary browser, isn't it? I think you may be stuck  
with MS for these features, unless the client is open to something  
like open source collaborative document management with Twiki or  
Alfresco or Plone.
