Apache with mod_dav would seem to suffice. All current desktop OSes  
provide access to WebDAV shares like they were standard network shares.

Now that doesn't mean that Word or Excel is good at accessing  
documents that aren't stored locally. I remember issues at some point  
on the Mac, but I believe they have all been solved by now.
