Did you ever find anything practical, James?  I found strong  
recommendations for a mail server built with a combination of Postfix,  
MySQL and the Cyrus IMAP server.  I had a system up and running based  
on Debian about three years ago.  Getting it all working wasn't easy  
then, but I think that with CentOS, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu available now,  
it would be.  Also, I think integrating spam and a/v with that would  
be reasonably straightforward today.
