Good news and not,

I got my FC 4 machine up and running.
I broke down and installed KDE.
I also tested NetBeans.
The Sun JDK and NetBeans work beautifully on FC 4.
(The applications that they create have a weird jar file dependency.
I think that jar file is public domain or GPL'ed. I'll check again.)

I have the book in front of me. I'll try to finish the review before
the next meeting.

I setup dual-booting so that I can use FC4 with and without the Sun
JDK. The book mentions "gcj" and how the different JDKs work. I
wanted to setup controlled environments while I was reading the book
and doing the exercises. (The emperical scientist in me is picky
about that kind of thing.)

In the process of setting up dual-booting, I hosed the partition that
had the Sun JDK. I learned how to use (or how not to use) Linux
partitions and the ext2/ext3 filesystem properly. (I think I saved
the relevant Sun JDK rpms and install scripts; I just need to restore
them.)

More later...

-Roger
